abstract = "The present work was to determine the variation of the dune cover
along the area of the municipalityof s{\~a}o jos{\'e} do norte,
rs between the years of 2005 and 2011. For that, TM-Landsat 5
orbital images of the years2005, 2006, 2009 and 2011. With these
images, the normalized difference snow index (NDSI), classified
bythresholds, was calculated, which resulted in a dune image for
each date. These images were used together withthe technique of
detection of changes to analyze variations in the coverage of
dunes along the area. The loss onthe dune area is a consequence of
human occupation and, mainly, changes in vegetation cover, caused
by theinsertion of exotic species (pinus and eucalyptus). The
subtraction in the area of the dune field observed totaledan
amount of about 13000 hectares. These data, however, are not yet
sufficient to clarify hypotheses about thedynamics of the area.
The losses in the dune fields totaled average rates of around 2000
hectares / year, following the pattern of the north-easterly (NE)
loam winds.",
